23. The Mount Gassan (Moon Mountain)

Basho climbed to top of the mount Gassan which is divine mountain. He saw the whole mountain shining under the moonlight after which the mountain was named.  He remembered cloud peaks from a daytime climb there.    He expresses his admiration for the magnificent appearance of Mount Gassan with a crushed peak of cloud through the innocence of children’s song.

Ku-mo no mi-ne        (Peak of cloud)

I-ku-tsu ku-zu-re-te     ( disappeared so many time)

Tu-ki-no ya-ma          ( against the Moon Mountain.)

“Peak of cloud disappeared so many times at the Moon Mountain.”
