22. The South Valley Branch Temple, The Mount Haguro
Basho was given accommodation several days at the South Valley branch temple.
There was snow remaining in the valley. Wind from south valley blew fragrance through the snow. The feeling of such innocence was expressed as “arigataya”
This haiku expressed Basho’s greeting and appreciation for the holly ground.
a-ri-ga-ta ya (Gratitude for)
yu-ki-wo ka-wo-ra-su (fragrance on snow)
mi-na-mi-ta-ni (blowing from the South Valley)
“Gratitude for
summer wind blowing fragrance on snow from
the
South Valley.”
