18. Yosenji Temple, Obanazawa

Basho stayed for 10 days at Obanazawa in the Dewa province and received the best hospitality.  The word of “nemaru” comes from a dialect of the Dewa province which means stay and take a rest comfortably.   Basho was invited to a temple that was cool and refreshing and he stayed as if he were in his own house.   He expressed his appreciation in the haiku.  The temple was cool and refreshing because of the open field behind it which received cool wind from the icy mountain top.

Su-zu-shi-sa-wo        (Coolness)

Wa-ga-ya-do-ni shi-te   (as my accommodation)

Ne-ma-ru-na-ri         (I stay comfortably)

I stayed comfortably with coolness as my accommodation.”

Season word: Suzusisa =coolness (Summer)
