19. The Risshakuji Temple, Yamagata

Basho recognized conspicuous silence when he heard only the note of the cicada at  the Russhakuji temple in Yamagata. He saw this as a moment of perfection.  

Shi-zu-ka-sa-ya       (Oh quiet !)

I-wa-ni-shi-mi-i-ru     (pierce into rocks)

Se-mi-no ko-e        (note of cicada)

“Quiet ! Note of the cicada pierce into the rocks.”
