15. The Takadate Hill, Hiraizumi

Basho was full of sentimental feeling when he saw summer grass at an ancient battle field , where long ago warriors fought for their dream.

For this haiku, Basho refers to the old Chinese poetry by Toho.

 
Na-tsu-ku-sa-ya             (Summer grass ! )

Tu-wa-mo-no-do-mo-ga      (warriors’)

Yu-me-no-a-to              (ruins of dream)

“Summer grass ! Ruins of warriors’ dream.”
