5. Unganji Temple, Kurobane
At Unganji Temple, Basho visited the remains of a cottage in the mountain where Priest
Buccho died. Priest Buccho was his old teacher of Zazen(sitting in religious contemplation) at Fukagawa.
The grove in summer was thick and a bird cried. But even woodpecker respected the cottage and did not tear it.
ki-tsu-tsu-ki mo (Woodpecker also)
i-o wa ya-bu-ra-zu (does not tear thatched cottage)
na-tsu ko-da-chi (in summer grove.)
“Woodpecker also does not tear the thatched cottage in summer grove.”
