At the time of early summer’s ascetic exercises, Basho was refreshed by the sight of a  water fall behind and the feeling captured by a water fall.

  shi-ba-ra-ku wa      (For a while)

ta-ki ni ko-mo-ru Ya   (confined in waterfall)

ge no ha-ji-me        (Beginning of summer)

“For a while, I was captured by waterfall in the beginning of summer.”
