6. The Yugyo’s Willow, Ashino

 Basho stopped at Yugyo’s Willow remembering an old history about Saigyo
writing a poem at the Yugyo’s willow where clear water streams.
  

 (Yugyo(about 600A.D.)was a traveling priest who revived theYugyou's
Willow.)

 (Saigyo(1118-1190) was a Japanese great priest and also poet.)

Then, rice-planting girl came and planted an area of rice field, and went away.

 

ta i-chi-ma-i        (One field of rice ) 

u-e-te ta-chi-sa-ru   (planted then went away)

ya-na-gi ka-na      (near the willow)

“At the willow, rice-planting girls planted one area of rice field, then, went away.”
