11. The Iogi Temple, Iizuka
When Basho visited the Iouji Temple which mourns for Sato brothers who died to protect Minamoto Yositune, he found a pannier and a long sword covered by dust in the warehouse.
Basho expressed in haiku with his desire not to keep these treasure in such a poor place and took them to display at the May festival like paper carp streamers.
o-i-mo ta-chi-mo (both carrying pannier and long sword)
sa-tsu-ki ni ka-za-re (to display in May Festival)
ka-mi-no-bo-ri (like paper carp streamer)
“Please display both the pannier and long sword at the May Festival like paper carp streamers.”
